The Philippines is one of the fastest urbanizing countries in East Asia. Metro Manila, the country’s national capital, is its primary urban agglomeration. Together with its peri-urban areas, Metro Manila accounts for 30 percent of the country’s population and 50 percent of economic output, while occupying less than 4 percent of the national territory.
